Non-toxic organic baby skincare products and nursery essentials arranged on natural wood — safe for gentle baby care

When I was pregnant, I spent hours researching nursery products. I read ingredient lists, compared certifications, and went down more rabbit holes than I care to admit. What I learned is that creating a non-toxic nursery doesn't have to be overwhelming — but it does require some intentionality.

Here's what I wish someone had told me from the start: you don't need everything. A few well-chosen, safe essentials will serve you far better than a room full of products you're unsure about.

The Crib Mattress: Where It All Starts

Your baby will spend more time on their mattress than anywhere else. This is the single most important investment in a non-toxic nursery. Look for GOTS-certified organic cotton covers, GOLS-certified organic latex or plant-based foam, and Greenguard Gold certification.

Organic Cotton Bedding

Conventional cotton is one of the most pesticide-heavy crops in the world. For crib sheets, swaddles, and sleep sacks, organic cotton makes a meaningful difference. Look for GOTS certification — it covers both the material and the manufacturing process.

A Quality Air Purifier

Babies breathe faster than adults, taking in more air relative to their body weight. A good HEPA air purifier in the nursery helps filter out dust, allergens, and VOCs from new furniture or paint.

Non-Toxic Paint

If you're painting the nursery, choose zero-VOC or low-VOC paint. Many conventional paints off-gas for months after application. I painted our nursery with a plant-based paint and let it air out for three weeks before setting up the room.

What You Can Skip

You don't need a wipe warmer, a dedicated changing table (a dresser with a changing pad works beautifully), or most of the gadgets marketed to new parents. Simplicity is your friend — both for your baby's environment and your peace of mind.
